Peace Prayer Walk

One-legged Torii, Urakami cathedral, Peace park and Nagasaki atomic bomb museum. One-legged Stone Torii (IpponAshi Torii) is the entrance of Mountain king shrine (Sanno Jinjya). Its impressive shape was caused by the blast wave of atomic bomb. Peace Park is a park commemorating the atomic bombing of the city on August 9, 1945 during World War II. Urakami Cathedral was built by “Hidden Christians” and there is a melted St. Mary statue due to the atomic bomb. Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum is located near the ground zero of atomic bombing. You can make an origami crane to pray for victims.

Oura Church and the Twenty-Six Martyrs Museum. Oura Church is also called “Basilica of the Twenty-Six Holy Martyrs of Japan” and is designated as a national treasure. It is not a barrier free building so it can only be observed from the bottom of stairs. The Twenty-Six Martyrs Museum and Monument were built to memorialize the 26 Christians, including 20 Japanese Christians and six foreign priests executed on this site. The displays include three periods: the early Christian propagation, the martyrdoms, and the persistence of Christianity underground during the persecution.
